How many of you are reading this on your iPhone while Alexa turns on your espresso machine and tells you today’s weather forecast, your FitBit reports how well you slept last night, and your refrigerator adds a carton of milk to your next grocery list? Ok, maybe you don’t have quite that robust of a setup at home, but it’s not farfetched. And the point is, all of these on-demand conveniences and capabilities are impacting our expectations in our business lives.
“We don’t want to be San Francisco’s back office — we need more creators here,” said Scott Salkin, a founder and the chief executive of Allbound, which is based in Phoenix, makes sales software and has offices down the hall from Gainsight’s.
The business of selling technology solutions—whether hardware, software or a service—is at a strange intersection; there’s constant curiosity about new trends, yet staunch reluctance to try any new sales strategies. Product teams, marketers, sellers and senior executives are keenly aware that the consumer landscape has undergone a complete overhaul. Yet many of the approaches to reach prospects and customers remain the same.
Two software, three biotech and an aerospace company are the six winning startups named today in the spring round of the Arizona Commerce Authority’s Arizona Innovation Challenge.
Software startups Allbound and Clean Router won, along with biotech companies Smart Brain Aging, Salutaris Medical Devices and AniCell BioTech. MWI was the winning aerospace company.

Allbound has landed "Shark Tank’s" Robert Herjavec as the keynote for its inaugural Phoenix conference in November. Herjavec, the founder and CEO of $125 million managed cyber security Herjavec Group and a popular shark on ABC’s Emmy-winning pitch show, is also a successful entrepreneur in the technology industry. The B2B customer has changed.
Whether they buy software or a new desk, for themselves or their business, they don’t do it the same as five or ten years ago. Some people might even say they’re not doing it the same way as a year ago, which is exciting but also scary if you’re on the sales end. People are constantly evolving the way they execute purchases.
Forward-thinking organizations continually adjust to this. That’s what happened with the inbound movement, where thought leaders like Hubspot said that we should stop cold calling, be thought leaders, and people will come to us. The same adjustment is necessary in all B2B sales.
Phoenix Business Journal sits down with Scott Salkin, Allbound CEO and Founder, who tells us his vision for the next big thing in tech.
What makes a good leader in the technology field?
Great leaders understand the importance of being in touch with people and getting the most out of them by always putting them first. Great leaders build an ecosystem of excellenvce and accountability amongst their team, their partners and their customers.
It happens every so often as founders and entrepreneurs. We get stuck, feel stressed out, wonder if what we're doing is all worth it. It doesn't happen often, because for the most part entrepreneurs aren't lacking in mental toughness, but the reality is that the tech world has a ninety percent failure rate cloud hanging over it. Still, we press on.
So now that the doom and gloom is out of the way, the beauty of innovation is that there is no shortage of inspiration to be found - from garage office incubators to a sprawling Silicon Valley campus. When the naysayers come calling, and they will, to whom can you turn to keep your confidence high, your spirit intact and your customers flowing in? Well, as the classic Ringo song says, you get by with a little help from your friends.
